World Garage Zip Pak
For his second full album on K, Angelo Spencer brought Les Hauts Sommets to the Dub Narcotic Studio for a summer-long session with production whiz Karl Blau. The result is World Garage [KLP235]. Here are a couple of selections chosen by Angelo as a special preview for the Singles Zip-Pak:
1. Tanger, Tanger
2. Let You Down
Angelo Spencer wrote the bare bones of “Tanger, Tanger” long before he recorded it for World Garage, but it was an unfinished work until after Angelo Spencer et les Hauts Sommets toured to Morocco in October, 2010. The city of Tangier and it’s culture fascinated the band. Angelo realized that the unfinished song was destined to be a sketch of Tangier and their love for it. “Let You Down” was inspired by a traditional Nubian (Egyptian) wedding song. It’s raw musical motif (“just the vibe”) was borrowed and fused to a new structure, arrangement and lyrics. On World Garage it is presented as a duet between Angelo and Rebecca Redman (whose family is of Iranian heritage), singing in the Farsi language.
This edition of the Singles Zip-Pak features Special Apps, recordings that do not appear on the World Garage phonograph record, available only here at the K Mail Order Dept.
3. Tanger, Tanger (Demo)
4. Tanger, Tanger Dub
Here are two alternate versions of the song “Tanger, Tanger”. The first is the initial exploratory “demonstration” version that Angelo Spencer recorded by himself at home on his digital eight-track machine. The second is a remix by Karl Blau done shortly after the mix used on World Garage.
The Angelo Spencer et les Hauts Sommets album World Garage [KLP235] became available July 5, 2011.
